Though the term “Marijuana” is often associated with addiction, its medicinal importance cannot be ignored altogether. The recent studies have proved the same and therefore legalizing the usage of marijuana has become an important issue for the USA Government. If it is indeed possible, then a qualified physician can prescribe marijuana directly to the patients for a better treatment. The demands of legalizing marijuana were raised even to a higher pitch after a United States Government study indicated that more than 98 million of the American citizens have used marijuana at least once in their lifetime. The importance of marijuana in solving several clinical issues cannot be declined altogether but the problem is that over usage can cause harm to a human life as well. Therefore, a strict law should be implied and that should be able to have constant vigil on the usage of marijuana.
This constant debate on whether marijuana should be legalized or not is on and both of the sides seem to have an opinion of their own.
Supporting the legalization
- The medicinal importance of marijuana has well documented proof; particularly when it comes to controlling certain forms of pain and nausea. In addition, it has also found to work well for treatment of multiple sclerosis and glaucoma. Those who are pro marijuana believe that if alcohol can be legalized for its clinical usage, then why not marijuana? People using marijuana in general experience lethargy and mellowness whereas alcohol can cause criminal behavior.
- If marijuana is taxed then there will be an opportunity for both State and Local Governments to add up certain revenues. A new avenue for employment will also be opened.
- AMA or American Medical Association has very recently changed its stands on legalizing marijuana. The studies AMA made on marijuana have been quite fruitful in this. They are now constantly persuading the USA Government to take a firm and permanent decision on legalizing marijuana. Moreover they believe that a strict law should be enough to lessen the chances of using marijuana in a malign manner.
The previous American Governments have been maintaining a quite stringent opposition to legalizing marijuana. But, the Obama administration has definitely taken a few positive steps off late. By their order, Federal Narcotic agents are no longer prosecuting people responsible for distribution of marijuana or using them in the states which legalized it. These things and the changed stances taken by AMA has made the numerous marijuana support groups all around the USA joyous. In addition, the American College of Physicians, which is the second largest doctors’ group in USA, recently hinted that improved research over marijuana should be held and the effects of marijuana must be reassessed. The California Medical Association also recently gave its opinion against marijuana criminalization. But, the resistances are still there!

Nearly 2 million United States citizens were arrested last year in relation with marijuana. The Drug Enforcement Administration and Food & Drug Administration are still against legalizing marijuana. The US Government, also despite of their recent flexibility, are still not much interested in legalizing it. But, pro marijuana supporters still believe that the “Myth” regarding ill effects of marijuana will certainly be broken and ultimately marijuana will be legalized.
